The Cotswold Lakes Trust recruited Rachael Barnet as their part/time Nature Engagement Officer. Rachael is funded by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund
Rachael has visited Ann Edwards school in South Cerney multiple times to deliver varied Forest School sessions with children across the whole of KS1, and carried out activities such as minibeast hunting, leaf ID and building ‘bird nests’ for toys we have of recognisable birds that live in the Cotswold lakes. Rachael also delivered an activity around hibernation in autumn with toy hedgehogs (with built-in thermometers), the children had to build their hibernacula in a sheltered spot and the team whose hedgehog stayed the warmest won.
Rachael has recently been working with Down Ampney Primary School, the whole school has been engaged from Reception to Year 6. Rachel has spent time with them minibeast hunting and using I.D cards to identify any discoveries what. She also looked at their pond and the different plants there and looked at the wider wildlife and nature of their school grounds.
Rachael has been active in informal education activities involving our mobile education centre – the Beaver Bus, she has also been organising pop-up events throughout the Cotswold Lakes during summer and other busy periods.
The funding from The Summerfield Trust is being spent on non-staff educational costs, and examples of expenditure items include; personal equipment for Rachel, toy birds from the RSPB, magnifying glasses and toy hedgehogs.
